Coaches Code of Conduct



The Board of Directors of the Bandera Youth Soccer Organization are concerned about the conduct of all coaches and referees during games and practices at all levels.  We want to ensure that interaction with the children, parents and volunteers involved in the program are fair, positive and enjoyable experiences.  To clarify expectation of coach conduct, we expect all coaches to conform to this code of conduct. (The term “Coach” shall include but is not limited to Director of Coaching, Head Coach, Assistant Coach(s) and Team Representative.)


I. Responsibilities to Players:


  1. Coaches must take all reasonable precautions to insure the safety of each youth. 
  2. At no time should a player be put at risk by returning from injury prematurely or by being forced to play while injured.  Coaches must never place the value of winning over the safety and welfare of players.
  3. Coaches shall instruct players to play within the written laws and within the spirit of the game at all times.
  4. Coaches are responsible for their players’ actions on the field and must not permit them to perform with the intent of causing injury to opposing players.
  5. Coaches should not tolerate inappropriate behavior from their players regardless of the situation.  If a player is disrespectful, irresponsible or overly aggressive, remove the player from the game or practice and explain that his or her behavior is unacceptable.  The player must change the behavior before being allowed to return to the game or practice.
  6. Coaches should be a positive role model and set the standard for sportsmanship.
  7. Coaches should keep sport in proper perspective with player’s academic education, the demands on a players time should never be so extensive as to interfere with academic goals and progress. 
  8. Coaches should continue their own education in the sport in order to be able to educate the players in technical, tactical, physical and psychological demands of the game for their level.
  9. Coaches should never condone the use of any drugs, alcoholic beverages or any other undesirable activity.
  10. Coaches should not provide compensation or inducement to a player.


II. Responsibilities to BYSO:


  1. Adherence by coaches to all BYSO rules and policies are mandatory and should never be violated.  It is the responsibility of every coach to know and understand these rules.
  2. Any problems that can not be resolved between coaches should be referred to the President or Vice President of BYSO.
  3. Coaches must report to BYSO any possible violation of the policies of the program, as well as whatever action has been taken.
  4. Coaches must ensure the cleanliness of facilities upon completion of his or her activity.
  5. Under no circumstances will a coach drop any youth from participation without the action first being approved by the BYSO Board of Directors.  BYSO must be notified immediately if any player is temporarily suspended for any reason.
  6. A coach should not represent himself or herself as an officer or spokesperson for BYSO to any group, committee or county agency without approval of the BYSO board.
  7. A coach should not offer to any other group or organization the use of any BYSO equipment or facilities without approval of BYSO.





III. Responsibilities to Officials


  1. Officials must have the support of coaches, players and spectators.  Criticism of officials undermines their purpose in the game.
  2. Officials should be treated with respect before, during and after the game.  Officials should be addressed as “Referee” and not by name.  Professional respect should be mutual and there should be no demeaning dialogue or gesture between official, coach, or player. 
  3. Comments regarding an official should be reported to a  BYSO board member.
  4. Referees – especially young and inexperienced ones – are like players and coaches, in that they need time to develop.  Coaches can play an important role in helping them to improve by allowing them to concentrate on the game.  Coaches should help by encouraging them, by accepting their inevitable, occasional mistakes and by offering constructive post-game comments. 


IV. Responsibilities of Game Day


  1. Coaches should be thoroughly acquainted with and demonstrate a working knowledge of the laws of the game of soccer.  Coaches are also responsible to ensure that their players understand the intent as well as the application of the laws at their level.
  2. Coaches shall exhibit a respectful attitude towards players, officials, spectators, opposing players and coaches.  Verbal abuse or physical assault of any kind will not be tolerated under any circumstances. 
  3. Coaches should be an example of dignity, patience and positive spirit before, during and after the game.
  4. Before a game, coaches should introduce themselves to the referee and opposing team’s coach.
  5. During a game, coaches are responsible for the conduct of the player’s parents.  It is imperative that the coach issue a copy of the parent code of conduct prior to the start of the season.
  6. While the game is in play, coaches shall not address the referee at all. (Except to call a time out).  Only the flag line men may address the referee to inform him/her of a missed call.
  7. Complaints or comments regarding a referee shall be reported to a BYSO board member.


The BYSO Board of Directors has the right to conduct hearings pertaining to coach conduct -  with the involved parties having the right to be present – on alleged violations of the BYSO Coaches Code of Conduct when properly submitted in writing.


I understand that if I fail to comply with the expectations described above, I will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension.  Furthermore, I understand that if my actions are in violation of the law, the BYSO Board of Directors is obliged to immediately notify proper authorities.
